R. Bryan McClanahan

Software Developer, Musician, Father

I have been developing software for over 25 years. I still enjoy what I do, but I need my hobbies to keep me sane. As a musician, I play guitar, bass, drums, and piano. I write music and record in my home studio.

Launching ConnectsBits.com: From Concept to Production

I'm excited to announce the launch of connectsbits.com, a website that I recently designed, developed, and deployed from the ground up. Like many modern web projects, this site was built with a focus on performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost efficiency. My goal was to create a professional online presence while leveraging modern tools and services that provide excellent value without introducing unnecessary complexity.

Design and User Experience

The design process started in Figma, where I created the site's visual direction, layout concepts, and custom iconography. Rather than relying on generic icon libraries, I designed each icon specifically for the brand to create a more cohesive and polished experience.

A website's first impression matters. Every design decision was made with clarity, usability, and visual consistency in mind.

Technology Stack

For the frontend, I chose a modern JavaScript-based architecture that prioritizes performance and developer productivity. The result is a fast-loading website that delivers a smooth experience across desktop and mobile devices.

The project was built using modern web development practices, including component-driven development, responsive design, and optimized asset delivery.

Hosting on Vercel's Free Tier

One of the goals of this project was to demonstrate how far you can go with thoughtfully selected free-tier services.

The entire website is hosted on Vercel's free tier. Vercel provides an excellent developer experience, automatic deployments, global content delivery, and reliable performance for small to medium-sized websites.

For many business websites, landing pages, portfolios, and marketing sites, the free tier offers more than enough resources to launch and operate successfully.

Email Delivery with Brevo

Brevo's free SMTP service powers the contact form.

Brevo offers a straightforward and reliable solution for transactional email delivery without the need to manage a mail server. Integrating SMTP services like Brevo enables secure delivery of contact form submissions while keeping operational costs low.

For smaller websites and early-stage projects, the free tier provides an excellent starting point.

Leveraging AI During Development

Artificial intelligence also played a role throughout the development process.

AI-assisted tools helped accelerate various aspects of the project, including brainstorming, content refinement, code generation, troubleshooting, and development workflows. While AI didn't replace engineering decisions or implementation expertise, it served as a valuable productivity tool that allowed me to move faster and focus more attention on architecture, user experience, and quality.

As AI tools continue to evolve, I expect they will become a standard part of every modern developer's toolkit.

Building Smarter, Not More Expensively

One of the biggest takeaways from this project is that launching a professional website doesn't necessarily require a large infrastructure budget.

By combining modern development tools, cloud hosting, free-tier services, and AI-assisted workflows, it's possible to build and deploy high-quality websites quickly and efficiently.

ConnectsBits.com is a practical example of how modern web technologies can be used to create a professional online presence while keeping costs under control.

I'm proud of the final result and look forward to continuing to enhance the platform as new ideas and opportunities emerge.
