R. Bryan McClanahan

Software Developer, Musician, Father

I have been developing software for over 25 years. I still enjoy what I do, but I need my hobbies to keep me sane. As a musician, I play guitar, bass, drums, and piano. I write music and record in my home studio.

Ever been contacted by three different recruiters for the same job you already interviewed for—and didn't present yourself the best?

That happened to me over the past couple of weeks. Same role, same company. I’d already been through their process, met with the exec team... and honestly, it didn’t go the way I hoped.

What’s wild is how disconnected the pipeline can be. Recruiters are still trying to fill a position I’ve already touched without a recruiter, without any visibility into how it played out. It’s a weird mix of flattering and frustrating.

Flattering because demand is out there, and my experience aligns with the position. Frustrating because it reminds me how much of this game is played behind disconnected curtains.

Still, I’m taking it as a sign. If multiple people think I’m a fit—even after a rough round—then I must be doing something right.

To anyone else out there navigating the chaos: Keep your head up. Not every door opens. But just being in the hallway means you’re getting closer.
